CareGuide UK

Question 21 of 30

Can you choose your own care home in the UK?

Yes, you have the right to express a preference for a care home, but the extent of your choice depends on how care is being funded. If you are self-funding, you can choose any home that meets your needs and has availability. If the local council is contributing to costs, they must consider your preference but can limit options to homes within their standard rate. If your preferred home charges more, a family member can top up the difference. The council cannot place someone in a home they have not agreed to.

If the council tries to limit your options to homes you find unsuitable, ask them to explain in writing why your preferred choice does not meet the criteria.
