Question 2 of 30

Do you have to sell your house to pay for care?

You do not have to sell your home to pay for care in most situations, but the rules depend on whether care is at home or in a care home. If care is provided at home, the property is usually not counted. If someone moves into a care home permanently, the value of their home may be considered, but there are important exceptions. If a spouse or certain family members still live there, the property may be disregarded. Councils may also offer deferred payment schemes so the home does not need to be sold immediately.

Always ask the council specifically about deferred payment schemes — many families are not told about this option unless they ask directly.
