Question 54

How do I find a care home with availability right now?

The most reliable way to find a care home with immediate availability is to call homes directly. Online directories such as carehome.co.uk and the CQC website list registered homes by area, but most do not update availability in real time. If the council is funding care, ask the social worker for a list of homes within the council rate that currently have vacancies. If self-funding, approach homes directly without waiting for a council assessment. When calling, ask specifically whether the home has a vacancy for the level of care needed — not just whether they have a room, as not all rooms may be appropriate for the person's needs.

Call five or six homes on the same day rather than working through them one at a time — it is far more effective when availability is urgent.
