Question 23 of 30
How do I request a care needs assessment?
A care needs assessment is a formal review by your local council's adult social care team to determine what support someone needs. It looks at ability to manage daily tasks, mental health, and the impact on family carers. The assessment is free and anyone can request one regardless of finances. To request one, contact your local council's adult social care department directly by phone or online. No GP referral is needed. Once requested, the council has a legal duty to carry out the assessment within a reasonable time.

You do not need a GP referral and you do not need to wait for a crisis — you can request an assessment at any point, even if needs are only beginning to develop.
