Question 35

What happens to someone's benefits when they move into a care home?

Several benefits change when someone moves permanently into a care home. Attendance Allowance and the care component of DLA or PIP usually stop after 28 days in the home. State Pension continues. Pension Credit may continue but at a reduced rate. Housing Benefit stops if the person no longer has their own property. Failing to notify the relevant agencies promptly can result in overpayments that must be repaid — which creates extra stress at an already difficult time. A benefits check before the move helps identify exactly what will change and when.

Notify the Pension Service and DWP as soon as a permanent move is confirmed — do not wait until after the move.
