Question 34

What is a direct payment and can I employ my own carer?

A direct payment is council care funding paid directly to you rather than used to arrange services on your behalf. You use it to employ your own carers, choose your own agency, or combine different types of support. Most adults eligible for council-funded care can request a direct payment. There are responsibilities — keeping records, managing payroll if employing someone directly, and ensuring care meets the agreed plan. A close family member living in the same household cannot usually be employed using a direct payment, though there are exceptions. Support organisations can help manage the administrative side if it feels complicated.

Ask about direct payments even if managing them feels daunting — local support organisations exist specifically to help people handle the administration.
