Question 49

What is extra care housing?

Extra care housing provides self-contained flats or bungalows where older people live independently but have care staff available on site, typically around the clock. Each resident has their own front door and manages their own home — it is not a care home. Care is arranged separately and can be increased as needs grow. It suits people who need regular but not intensive support and want to keep their independence. Properties are usually rented or purchased. It is particularly well suited to couples where one person has higher needs, as both can stay together.

Extra care housing often has waiting lists — if this seems like the right option in the future, register early even if the need is not immediate.
