Question 25 of 30
What is NHS Continuing Healthcare and who qualifies?
NHS Continuing Healthcare is a package of care fully funded by the NHS for people with a primary health need that is significant, complex or unpredictable. If someone qualifies, the NHS pays for all care — whether at home or in a care home — with no means testing. Eligibility is based entirely on health needs, not finances. The assessment involves a checklist screening, followed if needed by a full multi-disciplinary assessment. Many families are unaware this funding exists or do not realise they can request a review after being turned down. NHS Dorset's Continuing Healthcare team can be contacted on 0300 303 4410. Beacon CHC provides free independent support on 0345 548 0300.
If someone has been turned down for NHS Continuing Healthcare, ask for a review — a significant number of decisions are overturned on appeal.
What changes the answer
- Complexity and severity of health needs
- Whether needs are stable or unpredictable
- Outcome of the formal CHC assessment
