Question 53
What is the difference between a care home and a nursing home?
A care home provides accommodation and personal care — help with washing, dressing and meals — but does not have qualified nursing staff on site. A nursing home provides all of this plus 24-hour care from registered nurses for people with complex medical needs. Nursing homes are more expensive, but the NHS contributes £235.88 per week through the Funded Nursing Care payment, regardless of the person's financial situation. In everyday speech the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, which causes confusion. The CQC registration of a home confirms whether it is registered to provide nursing care.
Check the CQC registration of any home before visiting — a home must be specifically registered to provide nursing care and not all care homes are.
What changes the answer
- Whether the person has ongoing medical needs requiring nursing input
- Whether the Funded Nursing Care payment applies
- CQC registration status of the home
